Site of the Week: Write Or Die

Do you get easily distracted? Maybe you produce better results under pressure? Perhaps the idea of staring at a blank Word document on the screen just doesn’t do it for you. Or perhaps…. just perhaps, you like punishment? Anybody willing to confess to being into CWS (Creative Writing Sadism)? If any of these things above apply to you then you might like Write Or Die (click).

A simple writing tool at first glance but with the added feature of punishing you for not writing. Consequences include:

Gentle Mode: A certain amount of time after you stop writing, a box will pop up, gently reminding you to continue writing.
Normal Mode: If you persistently avoid writing, you will be played a most unpleasant sound. The sound will stop if and only if you continue to write.
Kamikaze Mode: Keep Writing or Your Work Will Unwrite Itself

Eek! I also notice that there is an “electric shock” mode but this doesn’t appear to work on the webapp. Perhaps the mobile version sets the phone to vibrate constantly?

Though it is designed primarily as an ipad app, there is an option to use a standard desktop / laptop (click the webapp option on the left hand menu). The web version is free, but the author asks for voluntary donations.

With this increasing focus on mobile apps, I’m likely to do an “Android Special” for the apps I use on my Samsung Galaxy. If anybody has an iPhone, iPad etc and would like to do a guest post “site of the week” on apps for Apple devices, please e-mail me at procrastin8or75 at googlemail dot com or comment below.

  1. Oh! I have an app on my iphone that I like. I use it to review my own stuff. Or other people’s stuff.

I’ve heard of Write or Die. I haven’t tried it, but it sounds a bit useful. I just use a timer and that is enough incentive for me. I just keep writing until the alarm goes off then give myself a stretch break, then go at it again if I have time. It works for me.

Excellent! I wonder if you’d like to do a guest post “site of the week” sometime in the future specifically for iphone apps?
