John Jacob Astor – The Titanic disaster

To many, John Jacob Astor (IV) was the highest profile victim of the Titanic disaster that took place one hundred years ago today (it struck ice very late on the 14th April and sank in the early hours of the 15th). A passenger in first class, he was known as an inventor and a philanthropist but how many know about his interest in science fiction? He wrote a sci fi novel A journey in Other Worlds which was published in 1894. In it he predicted a number of technologies that we have come since to realise.

Having bought it a few weeks ago on Kindle, I was hoping to be reading it already. Once I have finished Rivers of London it is next on my agenda so I will give a full rundown in my review at the end. I’m quite intrigued by this as I’ve not long discovered that Astor dabbled in sci fi.

    1. I only found out recently. I knew he liked to write but didn’t know about his interest in sci fi. I’m looking forward to reading it soon.
