The Doctor and Clara were in Bristol this week and so was that bloke who died in Casualty a few weeks ago. The TARDIS keeps shrinking and The Doctor is stuck in the TARDIS as the pair get sucked in to a strange case of disappearing people who get sucked into things and are replaced with images of themselves in a kind of Banksy style.
We see that friction again when The Doctor berates and then congratulates Clara for lying. They soon work together though and figure out that they have come from a universe where there are only two dimensions – rumour is that’s where Coronation Street was created.
*ahem*
My one and only question is…
What can “My Clara” mean?
Anybody have any thoughts related to this episode?
Another little Missy tease! I reckon they’re going to keep this up til the end of the last episode and then finally do a big reveal. I hope the payoff is worth it!
It was a pretty good ep I thought – not as good as last week’s which was written by the same screenwriter though. But it had some highlights like the Doctor pretending to be the Hand from the Addams Family!
Another episode in which Clara has to be a Doctor stand-in (first was Kill the Moon – or has it happened before and I’ve forgotten?) which also feels like they’re laying the groundwork for something. A spin off maybe? Someone (maybe on a forum and not here) mentioned the idea of Clara being the new Sarah Jane. Since she’s a teacher, it could work…
Nice Tennant esque ‘I’m the man that kills the monsters’ line. Bit hammy, but in good Who fashion :)
I wouldn’t be surprised if we have a big(ger) hint next week leading into the two-parter finale (apparently called Dark Water and Death in Heaven). The teasers are good, but I would have preferred more to go on to fuel the speculation a little and really get people talking. As it is, we are no more clued up now than we were are the end of Deep Breath.
I quite liked it, but I can’t explain what about it I liked. The bit in the tunnel was terrifying and the hand jokes were certainly amusing. Watching the mini TARDIS being pulled along off of the tracks was as hilarious as it was tense.
The thought crossed my mind last night. That’s two teenagers she’s piqued the curiosity of (Courtney and the boy from last night whose name I have forgotten). My thought was killed though by Missy’s comment – I can’t imagine what sort of end Clara is now going to have.
Why did Missy choose Clara? More precisely, what has she chosen her for? It’s like she’s beinng groomed for something. To take Missy’s place, perhaps.
I did like this episode a lot, starting with the original monster concept. I’ve often pondered 2D life myself so I felt particular attachment to this exploration. Though it was a shame they just turned out to be plain monsters. I feel the CG Was excellent. The moment the big hand grabbed the guy I. The tunnel and monsters’ attempts at 3D really impressed me.
I’m hoping there isn’t a Clara spin off. She’s definitely improved this season. But I always find myself asking ‘what would Amy do?’ And inevitably it’s the same thing. So Clara at her best is just an Amy filler and the terrible handling of her in series 7 is a huge weight dragging her down.
I just hope the nethersphere doesn’t turn out to simply be a cyber man factory. That would really disappoint.
The bit about choosing Clara has really thrown me now and I don’t know what to make of it, personally.
I don’t think there will be a Clara spin-off but I know what Cat meant above because I’ve sensed it too. This season, facets of Clara’s character have been quite reminiscent of Sarah Jane from the Baker era – forthright and courageous without becoming the “strong independent woman” trope (that obviously wasn’t a trope when Sarah Jane first did it). The banter about it is great, The Doctor referencing Clara’s passive-aggressive nature and referring to her more than once as a control freak which resulted in an angry outburst from her. Overall, I don’t think it is the writing of Clara that has improved her, but the dynamic between her and Capaldi.
It was a good episode, and without any robots or artificial intelligence that we could see. Although, I felt that we didn’t really learn much about the ‘Boneless’. Could they have been Timelords struggling to escape from their ‘imprisonment’?
As for the idea of a Clara spin-off… That could work,
but I think the Beeb has enough Kids shows in that area now with Wizards vs Aliens and so on. Rigsby and Courteney would fill the cast nicely though along with Danny for a little gymnastic badassery from time to time… Like next week’s episode from the look of that teaser.
I was struck by the fact Missy was holding an iPad though, not some mocked up futuristic version (or even a cheap unidentifiable tablet) does that mean Missy is not a technological menace, or that Apple/Siri run the Nethersphere (or that the prop department were having a bad day).
Matt, your question of ‘What would Amy do?’ made me laugh, Amy would have got angry, shouted in a Scottish accent, and then cried- we’ve got the Doctor for two of those now ;)
Ah good thinking; we know they are quite happy to sacrifice other species to save themselves so that is possible. If so, I think there will be many questions to ask about that – why The Doctor didn’t realise it for starters. He may have had an inkling.
You missed one thing: she would have shrieked “Roooorrrryyyyyyyyyyy!”
